iPhone Duo: Is Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Worth Buying?

Share
Share

Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone. Unlike conventional iPhones, the Duo combines a regular smartphone experience with a large 7.6-inch foldable display, bringing a completely new form factor to Apple’s lineup.

But there is one major question: Is the iPhone Duo worth spending nearly ₹3 lakh on in India?

Here is everything you need to know before buying it.

iPhone Duo Price in India

The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 for the 256GB model in India. Apple offers four storage options:

StoragePrice in India
256GB₹2,99,900
512GB₹3,24,900
1TB₹3,74,900
2TB₹4,49,900

The phone is available in Star White and Night Sky. Pre-orders in India begin at 5:30 PM IST on October 16, 2026, with availability starting October 23. 

That makes the iPhone Duo one of the most expensive mainstream smartphones available in India.

A 7.6-inch Foldable Display

The biggest reason to consider the Duo is its display.

When unfolded, the iPhone Duo provides a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display, making it Apple’s largest iPhone display ever. The inner screen also features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections and glare.

When folded, you get a 5.4-inch outer display for normal smartphone use.

This gives the Duo two distinct modes:

Folded:
A compact smartphone for calls, messages, social media and quick tasks.

Unfolded:
A much larger screen for movies, gaming, multitasking, reading and productivity.

Apple says the inner display is 50% larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The Design Is the Main Attraction

Apple has focused heavily on making the Duo feel like a premium foldable rather than simply putting an iPhone inside a folding chassis.

The phone uses a titanium frame and hinge cover, while Apple says the hinge has been engineered for durability and a smooth folding experience.

The Duo can also be positioned at different angles, allowing it to work somewhat like a mini stand.

For example, you can:

  • Watch videos without holding the phone
  • Make hands-free FaceTime calls
  • Use StandBy mode
  • Use two apps side-by-side
  • Position the phone at different viewing angles
  • Use the large screen for gaming and productivity

This flexibility is probably the biggest reason someone would choose Duo over a conventional iPhone.

A20 Pro Chip and Apple Intelligence

The iPhone Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip with a dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Apple claims up to 20% faster CPU performance compared with the previous-generation A19 Pro and up to 50% more memory bandwidth. The phone also uses a vapour-cooled thermal system for demanding workloads and gaming.

The Duo also supports Apple’s AI features, including Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.

However, AI alone isn’t a good reason to spend ₹2,99,900. Similar AI capabilities are available on considerably cheaper iPhones.

Camera: Good, But Not the Main Reason to Buy

The iPhone Duo comes with a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system:

  • 48MP Fusion Main camera
  • 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera
  • 12MP Center Stage front camera
  • Under-display FaceTime camera

It can also record 4K video at up to 120fps and includes features such as Dual Capture, Smart Take and Duo Preview.

The camera system should be more than capable for everyday photography and video.

However, if professional photography is your priority, the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max may make more sense. Apple’s conventional Pro models have a more camera-focused system, including a dedicated telephoto camera and advanced variable-aperture technology.

Battery Life

Foldable phones have traditionally faced a difficult battery-life challenge because they need to power a much larger display.

Apple has addressed this with a dual-battery system.

Apple rates the Duo for:

  • Up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display
  • Up to 31 hours using the inner display

It also supports fast wired charging, reaching around 50% charge in approximately 20 minutes under Apple’s stated conditions.

For a foldable this thin, those numbers are impressive on paper.

One Important Limitation: eSIM Only

The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide.

There is no physical SIM card slot.

This isn’t necessarily a problem for most users in India, but buyers should check that their carrier and current plan support eSIM before purchasing.

Apple Pencil Support

Interestingly, Apple says the iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil (USB-C), with availability coming later in 2026.

This could make the large 7.6-inch display more useful for:

  • Note-taking
  • Sketching
  • Marking documents
  • Education
  • Productivity

For students and professionals, this could become one of the more interesting features of the Duo.

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max

The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900, while the Duo starts at ₹2,99,900. That’s a ₹1,20,000 difference before considering higher-storage configurations.

That’s a huge premium.

So, Is the iPhone Duo Worth Buying?

Yes, if…

The Duo makes sense if you:

  • Specifically want a foldable iPhone
  • Frequently consume movies and videos on your phone
  • Need a larger display for multitasking
  • Want a premium, unusual device
  • Use your phone for productivity
  • Are already deeply invested in Apple’s ecosystem
  • Don’t mind spending ₹3 lakh or more on a smartphone
  • Want Apple’s first-generation foldable experience

For these users, the Duo offers something that a conventional iPhone simply cannot.

No, if…

You should probably skip it if:

  • You mainly want the best camera
  • You don’t need a foldable screen
  • You want the best value for money
  • You are concerned about repair costs
  • You prefer a lighter, conventional smartphone
  • ₹3 lakh is a significant amount for you
  • You are upgrading from an older iPhone mainly for performance

In these cases, the iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max will likely be a much more sensible purchase.

Our Verdict

The iPhone Duo is technologically impressive, but it isn’t a value-for-money iPhone.

At ₹2,99,900, you’re paying a significant premium for the foldable design and the flexibility of a 7.6-inch display. The A20 Pro performance, Apple Intelligence and camera capabilities are excellent, but they don’t justify the additional ₹1.2 lakh over the iPhone 18 Pro Max for most people.

The Duo is therefore a product for enthusiasts rather than the average iPhone buyer.

Final recommendation

Buy the iPhone Duo if you specifically want a foldable iPhone and money isn’t your primary concern.

For everyone else, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is likely the smarter purchase.

Apple’s official India page lists the Duo at ₹2,99,900 and confirms its October 16 pre-order date and October 23 availability.
