Samsung confirms a 6.9-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, 200MP main camera, 50MP ultra-wide, dual telephoto cameras and a 5,000mAh battery for the S26 Ultra.

Apple’s official specifications list a 6.9-inch OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, A20 Pro, a 48MP triple-camera system and up to 43 hours of video playback for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Design: Two Different Approaches

Samsung and Apple have both taken a premium approach, but the phones feel very different.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra measures 78.1 × 163.6 × 7.9mm and weighs 214g. It combines its large display with Samsung’s integrated S Pen, making the Ultra more than just a conventional smartphone.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max measures 78.0 × 163.4 × 8.75mm and weighs 249g. Apple uses an aluminium unibody design with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra

The S26 Ultra is lighter and adds the versatility of an integrated S Pen.

Display: Samsung Takes the Lead

Both smartphones feature a huge 6.9-inch display and 120Hz adaptive refresh technology.

Samsung’s S26 Ultra uses a QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 1–120Hz adaptive refresh rate.

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 2868 × 1320 resolution and ProMotion up to 120Hz. Apple also claims up to 3,000 nits outdoor peak brightness.

For movies, gaming and general usage, both displays are excellent. But Samsung’s higher QHD+ resolution gives it an advantage for users who prioritize display sharpness.

🏆 Winner: Galaxy S26 Ultra

Performance: A Battle of Two Flagship Chips

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses Apple’s A20 Pro.

Both phones are designed for demanding workloads including gaming, video editing, AI processing and multitasking.

Apple’s advantage comes from its tight integration between hardware and iOS. Samsung’s advantage is the combination of flagship Snapdragon performance, generous memory configurations and Android’s flexibility.

For everyday performance, you are unlikely to feel that either phone is slow.

🏆 Winner: Tie

Camera: Samsung for Zoom, Apple for Video

This is probably the most interesting category.

Galaxy S26 Ultra Camera

Samsung gives the S26 Ultra an impressive camera setup:

  • 200MP wide camera
  • 50MP ultra-wide
  • 50MP telephoto
  • 10MP telephoto
  • 3x optical zoom
  • 5x optical zoom
  • Up to 10x optical-quality zoom

This makes the S26 Ultra particularly attractive for users who frequently photograph distant subjects.

iPhone 18 Pro Max Camera

Apple takes a different approach with three 48MP rear cameras:

  • 48MP Fusion Main with variable aperture
  • 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide
  • 48MP Fusion Telephoto
  • 4x optical telephoto
  • Up to 8x optical-quality zoom
  • Up to 40x digital zoom

The variable aperture on the main camera is one of the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s major upgrades, helping with low-light photography and depth-of-field control.

For photography

Galaxy S26 Ultra: Better choice for zoom flexibility and high-resolution photography.

For video

The iPhone 18 Pro Max offers an extensive professional video toolkit, including 4K Dolby Vision up to 120fps, ProRes, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Genlock support.

🏆 Camera Winner

Photography → Galaxy S26 Ultra

Professional video → iPhone 18 Pro Max

Battery and Charging

Samsung equips the Galaxy S26 Ultra with a 5,000mAh battery and supports wired charging of up to 60W. Samsung says it can reach around 75% in approximately 30 minutes with a 60W adapter.

Apple doesn’t publish the battery capacity in mAh, but its official rating gives the iPhone 18 Pro Max up to 43 hours of video playback. It can reach approximately 50% charge in around 15 minutes when paired with a 60W-capable adapter or higher under Apple’s specified conditions.

🏆 Winner: Tie

Samsung has the larger published battery capacity and fast charging, while Apple has an excellent claimed endurance figure.

S Pen vs Apple Ecosystem

This is where your personal preference becomes extremely important.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra’s built-in S Pen makes it particularly useful for:

  • Taking handwritten notes
  • Drawing
  • Editing documents
  • Signing PDFs
  • Photo editing
  • Productivity
  • Precision selections

Apple has no direct equivalent on the iPhone.

However, Apple’s ecosystem is one of its biggest advantages.

If you already own a MacBook, iPad, Apple Watch or AirPods, the iPhone 18 Pro Max integrates naturally with those devices.

🏆 Winner

Productivity → Galaxy S26 Ultra

Ecosystem → iPhone 18 Pro Max

AI: Galaxy AI vs Apple Intelligence

Samsung continues to put AI at the centre of its Galaxy experience, while Apple is integrating its latest Apple Intelligence capabilities throughout iOS.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max includes the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, with Apple highlighting a more personal and conversational Siri experience.

For users who like Android’s flexibility and Samsung’s broader AI integrations, the S26 Ultra is compelling.

For users already invested in Apple’s ecosystem, Apple’s approach may feel more seamless.

🏆 Winner: Tie

Which Phone Is Better for Gaming?

Both phones have flagship-level hardware, high-refresh-rate displays and advanced thermal management.

The S26 Ultra’s large QHD+ 120Hz display and Snapdragon platform make it an excellent gaming device.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max also brings hardware-accelerated ray tracing and the A20 Pro’s powerful CPU/GPU architecture.
